Oh how I love this bag and it is all because of that feather! I have been asking my friend Christina from The Sometimes Crafter for the pattern I kept seeing her make. She kept telling me in was on her to do list. I am persistent. I don’t know if it was me bugging her for the pattern EVERY TIME she posted one of these feather or it just got to the time to check it off of her to do list. Whatever the reason I am so so happy.
I tested the pattern for her and I looked at it a lot… I never knew how meticulous I was about reading something and picking it apart but I discovered I am really good at it:) But that is what a pattern tester does. I wanted this pattern to be what Christina wanted it to be. I wanted to be a good tester.
And then I made my first feather while not READING the pattern like I should have and goofed. BIG TIME. Yea the back of the bag has my mistake feather… I liked it though. I really like to remind myself to pay attention to things more because it shows when you do and when you don’t. Yep like the feather that isn’t a feather up there. So that my friends is what happens when you think you know what you are doing and don’t pay attention to the pattern.
Okay moving on. I really love a pocket on a bag. I like it for keys, phone, anything. It comes in handy. So that awesome Sarah Jane rocket fabric from her children at play line it was. I mean it makes me so happy to look at that fabric.
I love how delicate the stem on the feather is. I love that when you paper piece you can get that look in a block… something small and delicate.
I just added simple green polka dot handles to the bag. I didn’t even add interfacing. I just wanted something easy to carry and not heavy.
I wanted a scrappy feather for some reason. I don’t really know why but I knew immediately that is what I wanted so to my scraps I went. I found some rockets, donkeys in rain boots, bicycles, and more polka dots.
The quilting is just some straight lines in groups of three. Simple and not overly quilted but enough to make it stay and give some structure. I used a linen/burlap I had leftover from the Florida Wildflower Bag I made Carolyn.
So do you want to get your hands on Christina’s Feather Pattern?
She has the Feathers Foundation Paper Piecing Pattern HERE. This is a great option if you just want to make a couple of feathers for all kinds of different projects.
She also has the Feathers in the Wind Quilt pattern available HERE. She shows uses the feathers to make a beautiful and simple quilt. I love, love, love the simplicity of this quilt.

Meet Miki from Sparrow Quilt co. I meant Miki online when I started Modern Sewciety. She was a follower and was excited about the podcast and blog. I loved that she was a young sewist like myself so we chafed back and forth. She said she would like to be on the podcast and I of course said please do. So we made arrangements for her to come on and chat. She has the blog Sparrow Quilt Co.
She does work for herself but she also does commission work. Here is something she recently posted on instagram.
I mean isn’t that the cutest ever!!! makes me wanna appliqué and well that is saying A LOT! She is a modern quilter that is part of the Philadelphia Modern Quilting Guild. That is so cool in itself.
I would love for you guys to check on Sparrow Quilt Co. I think you will love Miki and she is active on social media so go follow her there too.
Also check out her pattern shop which she says there are more new patterns to come.

Okay that gorgeous lady up there is Christina. I have to confess I want her skin. Okay that is a little weird. Sorry. Seriously Christina is the sweetest person you will ever meet. Actually I have only met her online and well she has always been more than kind and helpful. I love that and I love that she has a new book out to share with all of us called Quilting Happiness. Don’t you love that name?!?!? Well it is just that finding what makes you happy in this craft we all love. The book is full of exercises to help you understand why you do this craft called quilting and how you can find your happiness. There are so many great exercises in the book that make you look at the why of making a project for you… yea you. It is like your own little class to get to know yourself better. Well your creative self that is. Go check out the QUILTING HAPPINESS book website.

One thing I love about Christina is that she gets math because someone in this world needs to because I don’t. She is awesome and putting together patterns and has some really great ones in her shop. I have been wanting to make the Ornate Mini Quilt for a long time and I really need to get on that.
