The one cool thing about having Modern Sewciety in my life are the amazing people I have met and had the privilege of chatting with. We recently chatting on the Modern Sewciety Podcast, episode 028. I really love a challenge and a challenge is what Daryl from Fabric Spark gave me. She said go to my shop and put together a bundle of 6 fabrics. That was it. I said okay….
and then I said oh my gosh maybe I should have thought about this a little more. I don’t know if I can put different fabrics together. I might not be great at this. I might not put together something anyone will buy. What if I fail at this all together. I even thought about emailing to say WHOA I need help.
I like what others put together bundles for me or I buy a collection that all matches and I don’t have to think about things. Yes I am one of those people who gets scared at putting together different fabrics because I see so many do it so well that I don’t know if I can do it like that. But I did just jump right in and picked a feature fabric that I have really liked for a long time which is the Bonnie Christine Bee Sweet Morning print. I really love that print so I used it as the first fabric and went from there.
I really wanted a Carolyn Friedlander print because it is a low volume print that I LOVE! So I added it to the mix. Then the Lotta Jansdotter yellow print was a must. It went so well with the main fabric.
Next I really loved the Tree Rings by Martha Negley. They were so nature inspired and the colors were perfect so in the mix it went. I needed some orange and the Birch Ipanema print went so well and in the mix it went.
And the surprising part was the blue Downton Abbey print that just worked oh so well with everything. It was so perfect for this bundle of fabric. You guys all know I love Downton Abbey so I was excited to add that print to the bundle.
I sent the bundle to Daryl and she loved it. She really did and I was so proud of myself I have to say. I stretched myself and it paid off. I even ran in and showed my husband who said he loved it. Okay so by their reactions I starting thinking maybe I had missed this fabric bundle making calling. Okay maybe not but I was so happy that I didn’t need to be scared of putting different fabrics together anymore. I think the key was finding that main fabric and pulling in other fabrics that went well with it. It made it so much easier to know what I was looking for.
And guess what! The day that Daryl posted the bundle for sale on Fabric Spark all of the bundles sold out. She sent me the email and hoped I wasn’t upset… nope I was flattered. lol Totally giddy.
She sent me my very own bundle and I decided to make the popular Molly Market Tote by Super Orange Sewing (etsy). I was determined to only use the bundle to make the bag and I did! I did a sort of quilt as you go for the outer pieces, I pieced three pieced to make the sides and bottom, and added my own little bee pocket for the inside. I think it turned out so cute. I enjoyed making it all but that biased binding. We didn’t get along but I made it through and my youngest daughter has kidnapped the bag for her own. Yea she is FOUR! The girl has good taste. lol
There is awesome news – Daryl saved a bundle for one lucky reader!!!!! Seriously you can win the Modern Sewciety Blogger Bundle from Fabric Spark AND you will also win the Molly Market tote pattern I used in the pictures as well. I used only the bundle to make the tote so you will be able to make one of your very own if you would like!
